Apple Vision Pro: Reviewers realize what pALS already know
Eye gaze requires you to look at what you want to click...
I have been watching the YouTube reviews of the Apple Vision Pro, the Apple device that is most relevant to pALS! The reviews from Marques Brownlee and The Verge mentioned a quirk about eye gaze control.
But they also all gushed about how magical the eye gaze control is on the AVP (not Alien vs, Predator!). It is a great way to control the system, and I am excited!
Eye gaze has an interesting quirk: you have to look directly at things you want to manipulate! That might seem obvious, but you don't look at everything you work with on the computer. I promise!
I realized this quickly when I transitioned to eye gaze! I had to look directly at things. I used to use a mouse or keyboard to control my computer, and didn't look at the cursor the entire time. I jumped to the destination or checked something with my eyes while moving something with my mouse. I really miss typing without using my eyes!
So, welcome to eye gaze! You can't check another thing while using eye gaze to do something. It is kinda funny to see people complaining about something that I live with every day. I don't mean to be flippant or critical. This is just one more thing that hilights how weird ALS is!
The reviews were very interesting, and focused on the powerful and game changing system that is the Apple Vision Pro! But, this is clearly a system that Apple does not know what it is for. It is clearly a powerful computer that attaches to your face. But, other than amazing videos, it doesn't have an obvious use case for most people.
I, on the other hand, know exactly what I will use it for!
I am so excited to go outside and be able to communicate! I want to sit on the porch and watch my kids get off the bus, and say hello to my neighbors. I usually sit inside in a dark room so my eyes can use traditional eye gaze. The Apple Vision Pro shields the eyes from ambient light, and potentially works in the brightest sunlight!
I could also use it in the car or while getting ready for a shower, lowering the time when I am out of communication! I am excited to see what this device can do!
I expect to talk about more details this weekend as I prepare to get the unit on Monday. So, if you have any questions, let me know!
I’m curious to see what communication features this device holds, and wish we had iguanas eyes that could point in different directions! One for input and the other for output.
